The Maple Leafs have signed GM Dave Nonis to a five-year extension, according to an ESPN.com report.

Nonis took over for the fired Brian Burke just before the start of the 2013 season. The Maple Leafs finished fifth in the Eastern Conference, making the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

In announcing the extension, Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment president and CEO Tim Leiweke said Thursday that ownership and management "felt it critical" to extend Nonis' deal now as a reward for the team's progress.

Dough Weight, Bill Guerin, Peter Karmanos, Ron Mason and Cindy Curley are headed for the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.

USA Hockey made the announcement Thursday, according to an ESPN.com report.

Defensemen Scott Niedermayer and Chris Chelios, along with forward Brendan Shanahan have been picked for the Hockey Hall of Fame, according to an ESPN.com report on Tuesday.

They'll be joined in the class of 2013 by Geraldine Heaney, the third woman to be enshrined in the hall, and coach Fred Shero, who led the Flyers to the Stanley Cup in 1974 and '75.
